Your Eye Test Explained

At Conlons of Barrow, we take your eye examination very seriously. That is why we allow at least 30 minutes for each examination, which is much longer than most other opticians. We have invested heavily in the latest equipment to ensure that every part of your eye examination is as thorough and accurate as possible. With equipment like the Topcon Maestro 3D OCT, the latest Henson visual fields screener and Topcon phoropter head unit, it's no wonder we are considered by many to be the best opticians in Barrow.

All health examinations are carried out by an Optometrist and unlike most high-street chain opticians we don't delegate to unqualified members of staff

The Optometrist:

The actual eye examination itself consists of four main parts and is conducted by one of our highly experienced optometrists. The main parts of the eye examination include:

(a) The initial conversation and history taking:

Our optometrist will discuss in detail the reason for your visit as well as any ocular and systemic health problems. By taking a thorough history, our optometrist can establish any areas of concern and provide you with all the necessary help and advice you may require.

(b) The subjective refraction:

This is when your prescription is formulated. What ends up in your spectacles or contact lenses is a direct result of this part of the examination. Our state of the art phoropter head means our subjective results are second to none.

(c) The ocular examination:

The most important part of the examination bar none! William Shakespeare once said "the eyes are the windows to your soul....". How true this is. Many systemic disorders are regularly picked up at your eye examination. At Conlons of Barrow we use state of the art equipment .

(d) The summary:

At the end of the examination our optometrist will discuss their findings, along with any prescription requirements you may (or may not) have, and the different means of correction available to you. This is your opportunity to ask your optometrist any final questions you may have thought of during the examination and to ensure you leave the examination room feeling fully satisfied. The optometrist will hand you over to a member of our team in the privacy of the consulting room, passing on any relevant information and dispensing requirements. Should any additional tests be required, the optometrist will ensure a team member completes these before you leave.
